Preseason Scouting Report by James Kuntz

Created August 24, 2021

(+) Versatility Burks plays primarily from the slot but is utilized in many ways including jet motion, orbit motion, or even being aligned as an H-back. A creative offensive coordinator will take advantage of this versatility similar to how Kyle Shanahan used Deebo Samuel as a rookie.

(+) Hands Burks has 5XL hands (I’m not joking!) and it shows. He rarely drops passes and even flashed incredible hand-eye coordination when he made a highlight reel one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone against Ole Miss.

(+) Linear Athleticism I expect Burks to test well at the combine due to his impressive linear athleticism. He has very good acceleration and good speed, especially for his size. For these reasons, Burks will be an analytics darling.

(-) Change of Direction The one glaring hole in Burks’ game is his inability to change directions quickly. The single biggest thing Burks can do if he wants to be a first round pick is improve his agility, although I have a sneaking suspicion that his inability to change directions is an innate trait and cannot be fixed with any amount of training.

(-) Not Playing Outside Burks was primarily a slot receiver in 2020. Given how highly the NFL values the ability to play outside and win against press coverage, Burks would help his draft stock if he played well as an outside receiver in 2021.

(-) Needs to Win Downfield The 2020 version of Treylon Burks was an underneath, “big slot” receiver. This deployment does not necessarily preclude him from winning down the field, but in 2020 Burks simply did not run deep routes from the slot very frequently. Burks would be a more compelling prospect if he could demonstrate the ability to win on the deep ball.
