Notes:
(+) Experience
Howell has started in 25 games so far in his career. Most quarterbacks can only dream of that level of starting experience. From a practical standpoint, that means that Howell will have more game reps going into the NFL than any other QB in his class, which puts him at a significant advantage.
(+) Toughness
One of Howell's most noticeable qualities is his willingness to stand in the pocket and take big hits from the defense if it gives him the opportunity to complete a pass. NFL teams will appreciate this toughness.
(+) Deep Accuracy
Sam Howell was very accurate as a deep thrower in 2020. He not only puts the ball in the optimal place for his receivers but he also throws with great touch.
(-) Plays in an Air Raid Offense
Air Raid quarterbacks have been successful in the NFL (e.g. Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield). However, the worry with Sam Howell is that the limited variety of throws his offense asks him to make is insufficient preparation for being an NFL quarterback.
(-) Supported by offensive playmakers
Yet another negative that Sam Howell has no control over. The 2020 UNC offense had two draftable wide receivers in Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome. It also had two of the first four runningbacks selected in the 2021 Draft in Javonte Williams and Michael Carter. Sam Howell shouldn't be punished for playing with good players, but 2021 offers a great opportunity for Howell to prove that he can facilitate a top offense without star playmakers.
