Preseason Scouting Report by Dalbin Osorio

Created August 24, 2021

Projection: 1st Round
Notes:

(+) Footwork

Cross does a very good job of establishing a half-man relationship (outside knee to crotch area), hitting his set points, and putting himself in the proper position to win the block.

(+) Use of Hands (Pass Pro)

Cross has his timing and placement down and can seamlessly control, steer, and push a defender up the arc and past the pocket.

(+) Mental Processing

Twists, loops, stunts, blitzes—it doesn't matter. Cross' ability to key and diagnose is some of the best in the class. (-) Run blocking

In 2020, Cross had 574 snaps as a pass blocker compared to only 146 as a run blocker in Mississippi's Air Raid system. I'll be watching 2021 closely before I give him a final grade, but I do like what I've seen so far.

(-) Pass Sets

As mentioned, Cross displays very good footwork, but he still needs to work on varying his pass sets. He's pretty much married to a 45-degree angle set, and as a result, can be predictable and susceptible to speed rushers on the outside. An excellent example of this was versus Georgia when Cross gave up a sack to Azeez Ojulari on 4th down—with a little over a minute left—to seal the game for the Bulldogs.

(-) Anchor

Don't get me wrong, Cross has a solid anchor, but he can get walked back at times when defenders get into his chest. He needs to work on getting his pad level down, hopping back (instead of walking), snapping his hips, resetting his hands, and getting underneath the bull rusher.
